Drinks by the Dram’s Advent Calendars Return For 2019

It’s (almost) the most wonderful time of the year

Yeah yeah, we know. The UK has just had a heatwave, people have been baking cookies on their car dashboards in New York...and yet. Here we are, talking about Christmas. But, for good reason - there’s fewer than four months to go now until the big day. You’ve probably already been thinking about which relatives you’ll have to endure come December 25th. And, if you’re thinking about sleeping arrangements for Aunt Mabel and her dog Dave then you may as well be thinking about counting down to Christmas with a Drinks by the Dram Advent Calendar.

That’s right, our booze-filled calendars are making a return for 2019, packed with new liquids and encased in snazzy new packaging. From whisky and gin to rum and tequila, we have a calendar to suit every type of spirits fan. With a total of 25 calendars, ranging from the exquisite Icons range to our exciting Explorer editions, it doesn’t matter if you’re an aficionado or a newbie - there’s a dram-filled treat in store for you.

Plus, this year we’ve also teamed up with That Boutique-y Drinks Company again to bring you whisky and gin calendars filled with amazing expressions.

Like what you hear? Then head on over to our partner retailers Master of Malt, Hard to Find Whisky and The Spirit Co to really get that festive feeling kick-started. And, if you think you might not be on Santa’s nice list this year you’ve got a few weeks to do some serious sucking up…

Six tasting sets perfect for Mother's Day

Give mum something super to sip this Mothering Sunday…

Mums are generally super lovely human beings who have spent their lives cleaning up after us, reminding us that they’re always right and giving us helpful life advice. And Mother’s Day is the day to say thank you to her for everything she does (even if you don’t always appreciate the “I told you so” remarks.)

While flowers, chocolates and cushions are all great gifts, this year maybe think about giving her something a little more...spirited. We’ve rounded up six tasting sets perfect for Mother’s Day, filled with everything from gins and whiskies to rums and brandies.

Tasting Sets For Your Kindred Spirit...

This Valentine’s Day, All You Need is Love(ly) Drams

Gin & Whisky Post_FB v3.png

The Beatles told us love is all you need, and while that’s great, we’d argue there are some other pretty important things you need too. Oxygen, food and water obviously, closely followed by gin and whisky. Especially in dram-form, packaged in a delightful tasting set.

That’s right, lovers - in time for Valentine’s Day, we’ve created two new sets, each containing five drams. Which, we’ll admit does make the whole sharing thing awkward, so you either have to show you really love someone by giving up your last dram...or, get more than one set so there’s no fighting.

8. Website Gin Product v3.png
9. Website Whisky Product v3.png

In the Gin Tasting Set you’ll find these five colourful 3cl gins, (there’s even a magical colour-changing one!), plus tasting notes:

Proper Pink Gin
Pink 47 Gin
Sharish Blue Magic Gin
English Drinks Company Pink Gin
Edgerton Original Pink Gin

And, in the whisky tasting set you’ll find tasting notes and five delicious whiskies from Scottish single malts to Japanese Blends. Sadly no colour changing expressions though…

Tomintoul 10 Year Old
Suntory Toki
Tamdhu 10 Year Old
Isle Of Skye 8 Year Old (Ian Macleod)

So what are you waiting for? Head on over to Master of Malt now, where you can pick up a set for just £19.95 - you probably couldn’t even buy one red rose for that price, and these are way better…

Celebrate Burns Night With A Wee Dram

“Dear Sir, I'll gie ye some advice ...”

And that advice would be to celebrate Burns Night like the Scots themselves...with a wee dram. (And haggis and all the trimmings, if you so wish). But, for now let’s focus on the drams, ‘cos that’s what we know.

Burns Night comes but once a year and is a celebration of Robert Burns’ life. He was a poet - don’t you know it - who died in 1796 and the people of Scotland come together on January 25th to enjoy food, drink and his works.

In honour of the occasion, and our love of whisky, we’ve written a little poem for all you dram fans. It’s best enjoyed while sipping your tipple of choice (and hopefully the warmth of the whisky will make up for how truly terrible what you’re about to read is…)

An ode to a dram

O’ little dram, how lovely thee

Filled with delicious whisky

You may be small, but you are mighty

Bringing joy from Scotland to Blighty

On this Burns Night, you shall be tasted

Drinkers’ lips will be graced

With malts and grains, from sherried to peat

To celebrate this poet we shall have a treat

O’ little dram, how lovely thee

Filled with delicious whisky

Still with us? Good. Now, if you’re wondering which drams to open to celebrate Burns Night, might we suggest one of our whisky tasting sets? In fact, we have one that covers all bases - our Regions of Scotland Tasting Set comprises five drams from, you guessed it, regions of Scotland.
Inside you’ll find:

Glenfarclas 15 Year Old
Lagavulin 16 Year Old
Talisker 10 Year Old
Dalwhinnie 15 Year Old
Glenkinchie 12 Year Old

This tasting set is a great way to experience a range of different styles of whisky from across The Land of the Brave. Or, if a particular distillery or area is more your thing, check out our full range of tasting sets here.

Whatever your choice - bring on the Burns Night drams!

Cocktail recipes and top drams from That Boutique-y Gin and Whisky Advent Calendars

Screenshot 2018-12-11 at 16.52.26.png

Here at Drinks by the Dram HQ we don’t have favourites and love all of our advent calendars equally. But we do really really really like those Boutique-y ones. There’s gin, there’s whisky and there’s 24 days of awesomeness in each. Awesome Boutique-y booze. Yummers.

Anyway, to celebrate all things fun and festive, we pestered (or, asked really nicely and persistently as we like to put it), Boutique-y ambassadors Steph DiCamillo and Dave Worthington to step in front of a camera and talk at us. No pressure.

Thankfully they love to chat drinks and happily obliged, so now we can bring you not one, but two Boutique-y videos to enjoy. On Team Gin, Steph talks us through making a famous and fabulous cocktail using one of her favourite drams from the calendar, while on Team Whisky, Dave chats about the origins and tasting notes of one of his calendar selections.

Enjoy - and don’t forget to check out our social channels for daily dram fun and all kinds of festive spirits(s).

Secret Santa Gifts For Drink Lovers

The challenge will be actually giving them as a gift…

Crackers Baubles - Group.jpg

It’s the most wonderful time of the year for many-a-reason, not least because it’s the month in which it’s totally legitimate to eat chocolate at any time of day, to wear sequins and festive knitwear 90% of the time - and of course - drink.

However, it’s also the time of year when present buying is in abundance, and as well as having to track down something suitably floral for great aunt Maude, there’s also a good chance you’ll be doing a secret santa. Cue panic over working within a tiny budget to buy something relatively un-crap for someone you don’t really know. Not stressful at all…

Thankfully, lots of people like booze and being the helpful little elves we are, we’ve compiled this list of nice but inexpensive drinky treats. They’re so good you might want to tell people you were their secret santa. But don’t - just be inwardly smug and try not to look too disappointed when you unwrap novelty socks and a set of scented soaps.

Booze-Filled Christmas Crackers

Drinks+by+the+Dram+Single+Cracker+-+Bathtub+Gin - Jennifer Meredith.jpg

These cracking Christmas crackers are each filled with a delicious dram, paper hat and rubbish joke, and from whisky and gin to rum and cherry brandy, they’re a terrific treat for booze lovers. And, when it comes to secret santa-ing, they make excellent gifts for several reasons:
1) They come in pretty packaging so there’s no reason to wrap them. Plus we can all agree awkward shapes aren’t fun to wrap - save yourself the misery!
2) They mostly cost under a tenner, so you could potentially buy a couple. Up to you whether you actually give both away though…
3) The beauty of crackers is the person who pulls the bigger half wins the prize inside, so make sure you stand in the vicinity of the recipient and offer to help them pull…you could be bagging yourself that dram after all.

Spreadable Gin & Tonic Marmalade

A great gift for that person who always jokes about how it’s inappropriate to have gin for breakfast. Now they actually can, on their toast, swirled in their porridge or y’know, just straight from the jar with a spoon. It definitely works more effectively than pouring gin straight onto your food and will probably earn less bemused looks, too.

£9.99. Firebox

Whiskey Candle

There’s no denying some whiskies smell delicious, but if you went around emptying your drams across your furniture it would a) be messy and b) be an absolute waste of whisky, so it’s handy really that there’s a scented candle that smells of the stuff but won’t leave your carpets in a mess. Buy this for the whisky-loving interiors enthusiast and make all of their secret-santa-whisky-scented dreams come true.

£12.95. Not on the High Street

Gin and Whisky Baubles

Drinks by the Dram Single Bauble - Yuletide Gin (That Boutique-y Gin Company).jpg

New for this year we’ve introduced our booze-filled baubles, each containing a tasty tipple in the form of gin or whisky. Festive, tasty and starting at £4.75, if anything screams PERFECT SECRET SANTA GIFT! it’s this. (It doesn’t actually scream, don’t fear…)

From £4.75. Shop the full range at Master of Malt

Gin & Tonic Keyring

Accessorising with gin just got so much easier - buy this keyring for the stylish gin lover in your life/office. Keyrings might seem like the kind of thing you only buy at the end of a school trip, but trust us, whoever receives this will be very happy. The only way they might be happier is if it came attached to a bottle of actual gin.

12 Fun Facts About Christmas Around The World

This year some of our Advent Calendars have taken on a global feel, so here are some fun festive facts about Christmas around the world…

The Gin Advent Calendar - Festive.jpg

French bon bon sweets were actually the inspiration behind the Christmas cracker, because inventor Tom Smith liked the way they were wrapped. Then, one night by the fire he heard a cracking sound and had his eureka moment - and over 200 years later this British Christmas tradition is still a cracking (sorry) one…

Shouts of ‘he’s behind you!’ and ‘oh no it isn’t!’ can be heard in British theatres over Christmas as pantomime season takes place. Fairy tales are retold through song and dance, with the odd panto horse thrown in for good measure. Celebrities are usually the stars of the show and although other countries have now imported the panto, it’s seen as a quintessentially British tradition.

The Scotch Whisky Advent Calendar - Festive.jpg

Hogmanay, Scotland’s New Year’s Eve celebrations sees the tradition of ‘first footing’ taking place. Supposedly, the first foot in the house after midnight should belong to a dark-haired male carrying a dram of whisky to bring good luck for the year ahead. Kit Harrington, where are you?

Christmas was actually banned in Scotland in 1640 for 400 years and was only lifted in 1958 when it became a public holiday. Boxing Day wasn’t a public holiday until 1974. That’s a lot of Christmas presents to catch up on…

The Bourbon Advent Calendar - Festive.jpg

Reindeer, candy canes and glittering baubles are the standard tree decorations we all know and love - but how about a festive pickle? In America, legend has it a soldier who was captured during the American Civil War begged for a pickle when he was starving and it saved his life. So now Americans hide a decorative pickle on their trees and the person who discovers said pickle is destined to a year of good fortune.

The biggest Christmas present in the world was bestowed on the USA on 1886 when the French gifted them the Statue of Liberty. Weighing in at a hefty 225 tonnes and standing at 151 ft tall, it doesn’t bear thinking about how much wrapping paper was used…

Imagine if Rudolph’s name was Reginald. Or Rollo. That’s what nearly happened - the character was created by writer Robert L. May for department store Montgomery Ward’s colouring books, but they weren’t keen on the name Rudolph, and also didn’t want the reindeer to have a red nose because having a bright red nose was synonymous with being drunk. Luckily Robert May argued his case - Reginald the blue-nosed reindeer doesn’t really have the same ring…

The Rum Advent Calendar - Festive.jpg

In Puerto Rico on New Year’s Eve when the clock strikes midnight, it’s traditional to eat a grape on each chime for good luck, and if you manage to eat all 12 grapes you’ll have a prosperous year ahead.  Sadly, drinking wine doesn’t count.

A favourite Saint Lucian Christmas tradition is bamboo bursting, which involves the making of homemade fireworks from hollow bamboo canes. In the nights leading up to Christmas, the booms of exploding bamboo stalks can be heard on village streets.

Across many of the Caribbean islands, spring cleaning ahead of Christmas is the tradition - people paint their houses, hang new curtains and buy new furniture. Nothing like getting those resolutions started early!

The Tequila Advent Calendar - Festive.jpg

In Mexico, carving figurines out of radishes and then putting them on display is an actual thing in the city of Oaxaca. On December 23rd, Noche de Rábanos (night of the radishes) takes place, where people queue for hours to get a glimpse at the vegetables - which have been carved to depict anything from the nativity scene to animals. The winner of the best carved radish walks away with 12,000 pesos though (nearly £500) - not bad for sprucing up a salad.

January 6th is when Mexicans eat Rosca de Reyes - a sweet, ring-shaped bread, covered with jellied sweets. So far so delicious, but there’s a twist - inside is also a tiny figurine of the baby Jesus. The person who discovers it (hopefully not by swallowing it), must hold a tamale (a traditional Mexican dish) party on February 2.

Drinks by the Dram Launch Chocolate-Dipped Drams

Drinks by the Dram proudly presents the ultimate booze-and-chocolate pairing experience – Chocolate-Dipped Drams!

UPDATE: Suppose we should come clean - this announcement might have something to do with today's date...

It could be said that the team here at Drinks by the Dram HQ have our minds on one thing and one thing only: getting tasty spirits into small vessels. With Easter upon us, another thought appears – chocolate. We bloomin’ love chocolate. Now, two is a number that is almost twice as complicated as one, and frankly our minds don’t like to deviate from their original objective, so we had to come up with a way to combine these interests.

After much reflection, deliberation, theorisation and experimentation, we’ve done it. We have created Chocolate-Dipped Drams – the ultimate booze-and-chocolate pairing experience! You now have the option for your 30ml drams of whisky, rum, gin and more to be sealed with top-quality chocolate instead of our usual black wax.

Our popular Regions of Scotland Tasting Set, presented with Chocolate-Dipped Drams!

Working with the Polar Foils Chocolate Co., we have not only sourced chocolate that will offer the same dram-sealing ability of wax (ensuring that your tasty booze cannot escape its 30ml confines), we have also been able to pair all of the spirits available in our drams with a chocolate to complement each other’s flavour profile. We’re particularly fond of the subtly-nutty dark chocolate we found to pair with Dalmore 15 Year Old, if you’re looking to dive right in to the world of Chocolate-Dipped Drams....

This has also opened up new avenues for our Advent Calendars. For years we have rightly claimed that our booze-filled Advent Calendars are much more delicious than chocolate-filled Advent Calendars. Why not treat yourself to the best of both worlds? Starting this Christmas, we will be offering Advent Calendars filled with Chocolate-Dipped Drams! It’s almost like we hijacked the telepods from The Fly and instead of making some horrific insect-Jeff Goldblum hybrid, we’ve made the yummiest way to count down to Christmas even yummier!

Keep your eyes peeled for Chocolate-Dipped Drams appearing in all places where you can buy our wares soon. Tastiness awaits!

The 2018 World Whiskies Awards and World Gin Awards Tasting Sets!

We've once again created a series of Tasting Sets featuring winners from the World Whiskies Awards and World Gin Awards!

Following the announcement of all the World Whiskies Awards 2018 winners, we're rather excited to show off these terrific Tasting Sets - all filled with award-winning expressions! If juniper-based deliciousness is more your thing, you're in luck, because our World Gin Awards 2018 Overall Winners Tasting Set (packed to the brim with world-class gin) has been launched too. Don't say we don't spoil you.

We're the Drinks Marketing Challenge PR Campaign of the Year Winner!

We shouted about our Advent Calendars expertly enough to win the Drinks Marketing Challenge PR Campaign of the Year award from Drinks International!

Cast your mind back to December... and November... also October... September too... and you might just remember us making quite a heck of a lot of noise about our booze-filled Advent Calendars. It's easily the most exciting and most active time of the year for us, and we have loads of fun getting everyone into the Christmas spirit. Well, as it happens, the folks over at Drinks International were particularly impressed with what we accomplished and have awarded us the Drinks Marketing Challenge PR Campaign of the Year award!

We're utterly thrilled to have been recognised for our efforts, and frankly we can't wait to do it all again for 2018 - but bigger! However, we do solemnly swear not to mention Christmas again this year until it's absolutely necessary.

We've set our Sights on Skye with the Talisker Tasting Set!

Presenting a brand new Tasting Set, featuring five different drams from the terrific Talisker distillery on the Isle of Skye!

When writing a blog post about a Tasting Set filled with whiskies from the Isle of Skye, it can either go two ways: factual, or filled to the brim with references to The Island from LOST. Well, the latter option was considered heavily, but then we realised that the former would probably explain the Tasting Set better.

So, yes. There is a brand new Tasting Set on the block, featuring five different 30ml drams of single malt from the Talisker distillery! This includes the classic 10 Year Old, the Port cask-finished Port Ruighe, the powerful Talisker 57° North, the decadent 18 Year Old and the Talisker Distillers Edition (which is finished in casks that previously held Amoroso). Enjoy, and remember - 4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42.

Opening the Advent Calendars! Day 24

The day has come! It's Christmas Eve! Only ONE MORE SLEEP!!! But there's also a whole load of excitement to enjoy right now. It's bittersweet of course (Advent is drawing to a close after all), but these drams are absolute stunners. Enjoy – and have a very merry Christmas!

WhistlePig 12 Year Old – Old World: An exciting 12 year old straight rye whiskey inspired by the techniques of the 'old world', with a particular reverence for Scotch whisky, and finished in a selection of wine casks – 63% Madeira, 30% Sauternes and 7% Port. This dram is every bit as varied and delicious as you would imagine.

The Japanese Whisky Advent Calendar – #WhiskyAdvent

Japanese 24.png

Yamazaki 18 Year Old: A fitting way to conclude proceedings for Japanese whisky lovers, Yamazaki's legendary 18 year old is an earthy, rustic delight, with plenty of wood resin and a floral character teaming with zest and sherried peels.

December 24: The Yamazaki 18 Year Old Single Malt Whisky My notes: The nose is intense with earthy elements. The palate has all the similar elements; the earthy and oak taste is center stage accompanied with citrus. The finish lingers with continued citrus and fruit, transitioning to a sherry finish as the warming effect pleasantly stays with the taster. This is quite the endnote to this Japanese Whisky Advent journey. Being the oldest dram in the collection, the complexity is evident especially during the finish. That unique transition of flavors exemplifies this Yamazaki’s journey through the years. It is elegant, mature, and overall a pleasant journey. Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt The nose is quite thick and resinous, there is a pleasant oiliness with zesty citrus and peels and a hint of sherry. Plenty of oak and orchard fruits. The palate is of medium-body with green notes and an earthen note, plenty of wood resin and a floral character with zest and sherried peels. The finish is of good length with fruit and zest. For all my followers on social media, thank you for following me through this journey of Japanese Whisky discovery. I’m looking forward to sharing much more about whiskey from all over into 2018 and beyond. Cheers! And for those who celebrate: Merry Christmas / Happy Christmas / メリークリスマス! #roadtowhiskykingdom #japanesewhisky #suntory #suntorywhisky #theyamazaki #theyamazaki18 #18yearoldwhisky #singlemalt #singlemaltwhisky #masterofmalt #drinksbythedram #whiskyadvent

Teeling 24 Year Old - Vintage Reserve Collection: A 24 year old Irish single malt whiskey that was matured in bourbon casks before being given a finishing period in Sauternes wine barrels, this impressive edition from Teeling's Vintage Reserve Collection is suitably long, mellow and silky smooth. Just lovely.

North British 55 Year Old (Douglas Laing): Another Advent calendar corker for the final day, how can you not get excited about a 55 year old North British single grain, distilled in May 1962 and aged in a single refill hogshead until June 2017?

The Premium Whisky Advent Calendar – #WhiskyAdvent

Premium Whisky 24.png

The Half Century Blend Batch 2: Batch 2 of the stunning blend has the same the luxurious, velvety mouthfeel of the previous batch but adds in decadent notes of a Parisian chocolaterie, rich coffee, unctuous dark fruits and nutty caramel.

December 24. #ChristmasEve #theblendedwhiskycompany #thehalfcenturyblend #batch2 #agedover50years #blendedscotchwhisky @drinksbythedram @masterofmalt #🥃 #premiumwhisky #whiskyadvent Launched in the latter half of 2016, The Half-Century Blend is The Blended Whisky Company's bottle-shaped love letter to the days of whisky production where "less efficient barley-strains, sprawling on-site floor maltings, inefficient brewer’s yeast, lengthy fermentation times, mucky direct-fired stills, bulky and inefficient worm-tub condensers and less active refill casks" were the norm. As the name suggests, this astounding expression was made with whiskies which were aged for over 50 years, resulting in an immensely expressive flavour profile showing off the unmistakable characteristics of incredible whisky distilled over half a century ago. Only 768 bottles were produced in the first batch. Serge from WhiskyFun gave The Half-Century Blend a score of 90 Points. Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt Nose: Freshly baked apple crumble topped with brown sugar and extra-thick double cream, followed by roast chestnuts and a whiff of brandied cherries. A touch of tobacco leaf and old oak furniture. Palate: More cigar box and brown sugar on the palate, joined by bourbon-y vanilla and generous handfuls of dried fruit (with some juicy cherries sneaking in once again). Perhaps a touch of rye spice develops with the ethereal oak notes growing behind the rich fruit. Finish: Juicy apricot jam, gingerbread, walnut and the last hints of elegant oak lingering for ages. Overall: Massively, massively impressive blended Scotch whisky with seemingly endless poise and depth. #MerryChristmas #MerryChrisymasEve #happyholidays #🎄 #🎅🏼
